A recent camping trip...
in the Linville Gorge, North Carolina
It was a cool morning that day
and I was lucky to awaken to this...especially after the night before. I was just about to settle into my sleeping bag on the west side of the rim on Linville Mountain...with the Linville River some 1200 ft below.
As I was saying, "I was just settling in and gathering some firewood at the edge of old Hwy 105...which runs the length of the gorge. And I glanced north towards Hawks Bill Mountain... a strange, blueish light appeared off in the distance. At the time, I figured it was just a camper but something about it was strange. So at dawn, I hiked towards where the light had appeared to me the night before; there were no campers to be found anywhere.
This is where it gets interesting...For centuries folks have reported seeing strange lights in the L. Gorge. One enduring legend, is that a violent and bloody battle had occurred between two rival native American tribes: The Catawba and the Cherokee. The strange lights were, as the story goes...the women of the tribes searching for their fallen warriors, whom had died earlier in this fight. Had I seen the legendary, Green Mountain Lights? Much has been made of this strange phenomenon...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6wc5Ikcs5Y.
The Green Mountain lights does make an interesting story to tell around the camp fire. But to me, the light did resemble some type of gas. Who knows?"
